Expect the exam to take approximately ten hours, including up to 100 minutes for breaks.

They ask you to arrive 30 minutes early, but if you’re in a busy city, I’d recommend a “dry run” going to the center at the same time you’d travel for your test to confirm you’re leaving yourself adequate time. Do not walk into this test already late and frustrated, if at all possible.

Each physician-in-training has unique areas where they excel and others that require more attention. Here’s how to personalize your approach.

Begin by evaluating your current knowledge and skills. Identify your strong points, as well as the areas where you need improvement. I did this by taking a practice exam. After I became a professor, I used the same practice exams to allow my students in Internal Medicine (both medical students and residents) to test their knowledge as they proceeded through my rotation. I’m more of a morning person, so I’d tackle the most difficult topics first.
