Dr. Shannon has been involved in hospice and palliative medicine education for the past 20 years. He has designed and implemented al hospital based Palliative Care Consultative Service, an outpatient Palliative Care Clinic and the Palliative Care Interdisciplinary Team. Dr. Shannon also created the Mayo Clinic Palliative Medicine Fellowship and is the ongoing Fellowship Director for the past 6 years. Dr. Shega has given numerous lectures across the nation on hospice and palliative medicine. He has also written several scholarly publications and book chapters including work for UNIPAC and Curriculum for Primary Care Geriatrics. Dr. Shega had previously served as the Co-Medical Director of Northwestern Memorial Home Hospice Program and is on the Leadership Committee of Section of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at University of Chicago and Chair of the Ethics Committee with the American Geriatrics Society. Dr. Steinhorn has been directing pediatric palliative programs for nearly 20 years, starting with assisting in creating and acting as the first medical director for the Essential Care Program, Pediatric Hospice. He has served on the medical advisory board of Almost Home Kids and is the advisor to the Northern Illinois Pediatric Palliative Care Coalition. Dr. Steinhorn serves on the Executive Committee and was a founding member of the American Academy of Pediatrics' Section on Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Steinhorn has also written over a hundred journal articles, abstracts, and book chapters including in Palliative Care for Infants, Children and Adolescents.
