He was a co-investigator for the Minnesota Heart Survey, is the principal investigator for an NIH-funded epidemiologic study of acute myocardial infarction in the elderly, and co-chairs "Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes" (KDIGO), a National Kidney Foundation committee that reviews and updates guidelines for treating heart disease in renal patients. Dr. Berger is an American Heart Association grant reviewer, and has also reviewed manuscripts for several cardiology journals, including The American Journal of Epidemiology and American Journal of Kidney Disease.

Dr. Schaer's current research focuses on new interventional and drug therapies for patients with coronary and peripheral arterial disease. Dr. Schaer is the founder of Rush Interventional Heart and Vascular Research, which is currently enrolling patients into many drug and device trials, with a special interest in regenerative medicine. Dr. Schaer also supervises a large animal catheterization laboratory where new approaches are developed and tested. He has trained more than 130 general cardiology fellows and 25 interventional cardiology fellows. Dr. Schaer has authored or co-authored more than 200 original articles, book chapters, editorials, and abstracts. He lectures on acute coronary syndromes and other topics in interventional heart and vascular disease in the regionally, nationally and internationally.
